UNICEF: Providing vaccinations, safe water following the Balochistan flood
In a time of emergency, children in Pakistan face another deadly threat. In June, Cyclone Yemyin brought sweeping floods that affected two-point-five million people and killed over 300. In the wake of this disaster, UNICEF is undertaking a vaccination campaign to prevent measles from taking more innocent lives.
UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, and other partners are supporting the government in a measles campaign in the hardest hit areas of southern Pakistan. Dr. Amjad, UNICEF Health Officer on the measles campaign: "UNICEF has planned to vaccinate the children from the nine-months of the age up to the 15 years of the children. So we have planned to vaccinate about 124,000 children in the flood-affected districts, and instead of taking all the districts, we have chosen only seven districts which are badly affected by the floods." Torrential rains caught the village of Khurmastan in Balochistan province by surprise.
