Tips to prevent falls
Libby Prendergast has fallen several times in the past few years resulting in serious injuries including a broken arm
and an ankle, both requiring surgery.
Elizabeth Prendergast, victim of a fall:
"I find I always, not at home but when I'm going out somewhere, I want to know what I'm going to get into as far as the
terrain, and stairs. I’m less sure of myself. But I feel quite confident when I use the walker."
Fifty Five percent of fall injuries among older people occur inside the home.
Meri-K Appy, president, Home Safety Council:
"There are several reasons why an older person might experience a fall. As we age there are issues related to loss of
balance, sometimes the loss of strength in our leg muscles and extremities."
By implementing five easy steps, older adults can help to prevent falls in their own homes.
First, make sure your footwear fits well.
Be aware of stepping onto a surface that is lower than expected such as curbs and steps.
Start an exercise program to improve balance and coordination.
Review all prescriptions since some medications can contribute to falls.
Have your vision checked since poor vision can lead to increased falls.
Warren Burris, AARP,
Manager, Housing Options & Liveable Communities:
"AARP is taking on this issue of falls because it lends quality of life to our members."
