Goodwill Ambassador Angelique Kidjo in Benin campaigning for child rights
World renowned singer and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angelique Kidjo is in her home country of Benin this week
raising awareness about the rights of children.
Ms. Kidjo took part in several events including a taxi motorcycle rally as part of a campaign titled "Toutes les filles a
l'ecole - All Girls to school."
At one stop, Ms. Kidjo toured a kindergarten that is proving that school benefits not just children, but the community.
Mothers here now have more free time to start their own small businesses, using micro-credit funds provided with the
support of UNICEF. The income that these women are generating is paying for the education of these little ones and
their older siblings.
Angélique Kidjo, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador: "In order to improve the economies of our
countries in Africa, we need more children to go to school, in order to decrease child mortality we need kids to go to
school, in order for us to fight the pandemic of HIV/AIDS, we need our kids to go to school. One girl educated, is a
whole nation that can be educated."
Ms. Kidjo traveled to the water village of So-Ava. There she joined with Benin's new UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador
Zeynab to give support and to celebrate the progress that has been made to reduce the gap between the number of
young girls and boys in school here in Benin.
Singing, dancing and sharing stories of success, it is this kind of mobilization of communities and government leaders
that is providing a better life for all children.
