The children of Yemen are so eager to learn that they will even do it here, under trees in the heat of the Southern Arabian Peninsula. But for all the dedication, you are more likely to find a young girl here, at home doing chores. The number of girls go down until not a single girl can be found in class nine at this coed school in Zadiyah. As girls get older religious taboos do not allow them to be taught by male teachers. And small pockets of Yemen are making a stand. Outside Hodeida, this school, supported by UNICEF, gives girls a chance by employing female teachers. And though the dress is conservative, this is revolutionary. Young, confident women teachers educating the next generation of Yemeni girls.
