AARP: Glaucoma
An estimated 4.2 million Americans have glaucoma, according to the National Institutes of Health. However, only half of those affected with this blinding disease know it. During National Glaucoma Awareness Month, various organizations are educating Americans on the need for comprehensive eye exams to ensure early detection. Although there is no cure for the disease, health experts say early detection is the best treatment for prevention. While glaucoma currently accounts for 12 percent of blindness in the U.S., AARP health experts say the number of blind or visually impaired Americans is expected to double by the year 2020 as boomers age.
