UNICEF-sponsored centers provide nutrition and socialization for children after the quake
Rosa Linda and her son Daniel are going out to lunch, as they do every day.
In fact, many of the mothers of Pueblo Nuevo Peru, where more than 10 percent of children age 6-9 suffer from
malnutrition, bring their kids here for meals.
Thatâs because here they can make papilla, a high-protein, vitamin-rich food that the kids think is tasty ⦠and the
mothers know is nutritious.
Lunch over â but nobody eats and runs.
SB (Spanish) Rosa Linda Dias, mother: Our children also are taught to wash their hands, brush their teeth ⦠then
they have time to play and free their minds a little.
Nearly 100,000 children lost their homes in this coastal region of Peru after an earthquake last August. And while
many have returned to their villages after months in camps ⦠they have not necessarily returned to normalcy.
Not far from Pueblo Nuevo ⦠in San Augustin, kids flock to the World of Games, another UNICEF supported center in
the earthquake zone. There are 35 such playrooms in Chincha Alta district, catering to the needs of all ages:
SB (Spanish) Nancy Guzman Rivera, Field Monitor, El Mundo de los Juegos: We have different games for all ages â¦
the little ones come in the morning ⦠its so interesting to see parents and grandparents come along with their kids to
share the space full of games and counselling.
For a community still recovering from the shock and loss of last August â a place for the children is an asset for all.
